Climate flaps for groundwater

The project aims to install "climate flaps" in ditches that regularly run dry, in order to permanently retain a minimum amount of rainwater. This approach is intended to preserve small bodies of water even during extended dry periods while simultaneously storing precipitation in a decentralized manner.

The project addresses challenges such as falling groundwater levels, droughts, flood risks, and the loss of biodiversity. By intentionally retaining water in existing ditches, the project aims to stabilize small aquatic habitats and support natural water cycles.

The solution involves installing climate flaps into adapted ditch structures. These flaps are designed to be radio-controlled, allowing them to be unlocked when necessary. This enables water to be retained longer during dry spells and released in a more controlled manner during heavy rainfall.

Improved water retention offers benefits across various areas: groundwater levels can be stabilized, habitats for plants and animals can be preserved, and ecological diversity can be supported. At the same time, decentralized rainwater storage can help manage the impacts of both droughts and heavy rainfall events.

The funding will initially support the installation and practical testing of one climate flap in Münster. The goal is to ensure the long-term preservation of habitats for amphibians and other species within these small bodies of water.
